THE NEW ENGLISH YOU NEVER HEARD

                                              Sentence

what is sentence?

A  Sentence can be defined as a group of words making complete sense. This is not full definition, as you will learn later, but it will do for the moment. Not all groups of words make sense.

FOR INSTANCE____

a. The at five O' clock is flight next

b. Of the town they are at the other side live.

when a person said this to us we could probably sort out what he meant, but he would not be speaking in sentences; such person would be speaking a collection of words which have to be rearranged prior they can be said to make sense

These jumbles of words , however , do contain smaller groups which do make sense ; for example, at five O' clock ,of the town ;at the other side . But their sense is not complete ; the words do not express a whole idea; other words are needed to help them fit into understandable statement . Such groups of words  , making sense but not complete sense, are called phrases .

CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING__

a. The next flight is at five o' clock.

b. They live at the other side of the town.

These groups of words make complete sense and express complete thoughts. They are called sentences.

Additionally, a sentence contains two main parts_the subject, and the predicate.

The subject usually comes first and is followed by the predicate.

A sentence may contain only one word or many words

     EXAMPLES:

SUBJECT PREDICATE

The pupils are in the classroom

Many Lecturers own good cars

God lives

In some sentences, the predicate comes before the subject. Here ,the change in word order has to  be appreciated.

Example:

The 2012 elections were organised by INEC

We were surprised at his achievement

The above underline words are subject of the sentence.

In some sentences, however, the subjects are not  expressed but there is an understood 'you'

EXAMPLES: Go away.......

(you) go away

Come here: meaning

(you) come here

Eat the food: meaning

        you eat the food

Sentences also have kinds:

i. Statement: Thank you for your latter.

The next flight is by 5 o' clock

We can't wait any longer.

Question:         who is there?

     did john take the drugs?

      where are the children?

Command:    keep off the grass

leave this place

leave the lecture hall at once๐Ÿ‘

Exclamation:      what a nuisance it is!

oh! my goodness

                           wow! that is amazing
