PHRASES AND CLAUSES
A phrase, is defined as a group of words which contains no finite verb.it is also a group of words similar to single part of speech , but has no subject or predicate of it's own .
TYPES OF PHRASES:
These include: Noun phrase, adjectival phrase; adverbial phrase and prepositional phrase.
1:Noun phrase: A phrasal words said to be a noun when it used either as subject, object or complement of a verb or object of preposition.
Examples of noun phrase:-
⦁ A pinch of salt will do
⦁ A book of reading
⦁ A glass of water
⦁ A Business for the two
⦁ To do it is easy
⦁ A Stitch in time saves nine
2: Adjectival phrase_ it qualify nouns or pronouns. they include: on a hill , in the moon in the garden, with two children, with a large heed etc .
These phrase, as one should observe, can aslo be used as adverbial phrases.
3:Adverbial phrase_the unlined phrases in the sentences below are adverbial.
I. Tony built his house on a hill (place)
II. He helped the needy in times of need (time)
III. He feels like a fish out of water (manner)
IV. They divided the oranges into two equal parts (manner)
V. He ran away (degree)
4: Prepositional phrase_ In transformational Generative Grammar (T.G) a prepositional phrase is any phrase that begins with a preposition . But in general, a prepositional phrase usually begins with a preposition and always ends with a preposition. The only exception to this rule is the phrase 'on board'(ship). The following are undoubtedly prepositional phrases:
i. on top
ii. because of
iii. by way of
iv. in spite of
v. on behalf of
vi. in front of
vii. for the sake of
viii. with regard to
ix. on account of
x. with a view to
xi. in opposition to ; etc.
